During EVERY visit to Klym Dentistry our trained staff performs an oral cancer screening and checks the tissues in the mouth for irregularities. We also highly recommend our patients do self exams at home on a monthly basis to ensure any abnormalities are identified as early as possible.
Please follow the link below for information provided by the Ontario Dental Hygienist Association on how to perform this exam at home.
Signs and symptoms to watch out for include, but are not limited to sores, lumps, red or white patches, pain or numbness specific to one area, swelling in the mouth, or anything out of the ordinary that does not go away within 14 days. In any of these events, we encourage you to call the office and we would be happy to take a look and evaluate your concern.
Risk factors for oral cancer include, but are not limited to smoking, chewing tobacco, excessive alcohol use, and excessive sun exposure.
